Books make great gifts for the Holidays

christmas gift challenge 2

The Holiday Season is a great time to grab a signed book, they make memorable gifts. I am sure you all have heard of the 4 gift challenge? If you want to scale things down for presents you want to purchase:

Something they want

Something they need

Something they wear

Something they read.

If you stick to just these 4 simple gifts you will make your life less hectic, your gifts more meaningful, and hopefully your Holidays more joyful.

I especially love that the challenge includes “something they read” Books should always be considered as gifts, I do not mean the electronic book. I mean the kind you open, smell the pages, and yes others can see what you are reading. As an author, we really do not mind that you are reading our books out in the open–free advertising!!

If you are lucky enough to find a bookstore or festival hosting author signings-get your book at that event. A signed book is a great way to start a new tradition.

I wish you luck out in that shopping world, as always shop as local as you can to support the neighborhood businesses!! Adventures are waiting!!

Ask a Crafter 14: It’s EPIC!

I was asked to help the amazing Lindsay Weirich owner of The Frugal Crafter. She has an amazing blog and you tube channel on teaching how to craft and answers many questions every Wednesday on “Ask a Crafter”. I definitely have learned I am much better behind the camera or at least writing stories!!! But it was super fun to do and wow I learned a lot!!!

The Frugal Crafter Blog

Hello friends! It’s Wednesday and time for the latest episode of Ask a Crafter! My usual sidekick Lorraine was traveling so I asked my friend and author of the book The Rainbow Pants, Kelly Brooks Bay,  to co-host with me. She did a great job and it was a tall order with 7 pages of questions from you guys making this the longest AAC ever! I really love how this show is becoming a crafty collaborative effort, i love seeing the conversations popping up in the comments of my blog and YouTube video page. Crafters are the greatest, most giving people and the advise on stamp clubs and die cutters is invaluable for others. Sharing is caring and I think my viewers are the most caring bunch around! So, without further ado here is the latest installment of Ask a Crafter:

Bet you didn’t think we could talk…

I won a Liebster Blog Award 2013

Liebster image

As I am totally new to blogging I was humbled and honored to receive a Liebster Award. Of course I also did not know anything about it. First: thank you to DonCharisma.org for choosing TheRainbowPants.wordpress.com. I was nominated and accepted this award on October 30th 2013, well with 3 young kids and Halloween being our second most important holiday, I have been a little behind in posting my Liebster Award, but I am very grateful!!

Secondly: I needed to do a little research on what this award was.  After all I am a writer, and research just comes second nature to me. The Liebster Award is given to bloggers by other bloggers. Marketing at it’s very best “word of mouth” or at least the internet way of talking. A great way to “Pay it Forward” among bloggers.

If you accept it formally than you have a little work to do, think “a chain letter” you don’t want to break it. You can also accept it honorary and just say “thank you”. BUT I like the post by LorraineMarieReguly.wordpress.com who said:   ” It is said that the Liebster award was created to recognize and/or discover new bloggers and welcome them to the blogosphere. In the digital world of the internet, this seems like a nice gesture, in my opinion!”

Liebster is a German word that can mean kindest, dearest, or beloved. What I find most intreguing is that no one seems to know where the Liebster Award began or who started it. The basic rules are: I will answer the questions posted to me by DonCharisma.org (since he is the one who nominated me). I will then nominate other bloggers with less than 1000 followers (although this number changes based on how you research). The bloggers I nominate will have to decide if they accept their Liebster Award and answer some questions that I ask of them.

As DonCharmisma.org states the rules:

To accept this award, the awardee must do the following:

  1.  Link back and recognize the blogger who awarded you. (TheRainbowPants.wordpress.com)
  2. Answer the ten questions posted by the blogger who awarded you!
  3. Give between 3-10 bloggers the award and let them know.
  4. Create ten questions for your awardees to answer.
  5. Notify your awardees.

And then be excited that other people will learn about your blog and your followers will hopefully grow!!!

Ok so here goes on answering  my questions from: DonCharmisma.org

1) What would you do if you could do anything and you knew you couldn’t fail? I would jump out of a plane. My fear of heights keeps me from this but if I knew I couldn’t fail “Bombs Away”!!!!

2) Three reasons why WordPress.com is better than Facebook?: 1. I find it easier to post pictures. 2. I can write a whole lot more and tell a story. 3. Facebook feels more like “peeking into neighbors windows” (man I hope I am not in trouble for saying that one) and people are to quick to judge what they see or read.

3) Who is (or was) the most influential person in your life? My parents who instilled the love of reading and writing and supported me in publishing The Rainbow Pants.

4) What’s your favorite thing to post about on your blog? I love to write about the people I meet when doing book signings and readings for The Rainbow Pants.

5) How do you best handle heated/angry situations?: As a counselor I try to teach kids to use coping skills like counting to 10, scream in a pillow or write it down. I usually have to walk away and say the word “perspective” in my head over and over again. It helps keep me grounded instead of blowing up.

6) What is the most inspiring thing you’ve ever read, heard, or seen, and how has it helped you on your life’s journey?: I am inspired in little ways every day. I have worked with kids who do not have heat in their home or food in their bellies but they still come to school every day with smiles on their faces and a positive attitude!!!

7) What do you think are the three qualities to building and maintaining good friendships/relationships?: 1. Honesty, 2. Respect, 3. Laughter (with each other not at each other)

8) How did you pick your blog’s name?: Easy one it is the name of my first Children’s Picture book. The Rainbow Pants

9) What is your favorite book/author, or film(movie)/director, or play/play-write, or song/band, or symphony/composer  and why?: I love the entire Harry Potter series and I love J.K. Rowling story of writing where ever she could. I also love Jodi Picoult and have read everything she has written. She has a way of truly developing characters better than any other author I have read.  I have so many to write on this one I will just leave it at these 2.

10) What’s your favorite recipe you make?: I love to make homemade bread and Maine Baked Beans slow cooked all day long on a cold winter’s day in Maine. The delicious smell is delectable and takes over the entire home.

Now Comes the fun part I would like to Nominate and Award the Liebster award to the following blog:

1. StampingPeace.wordpress.com

2. AreWeThereYet?

3.Kimchilatkes.com

4.spilledmilkblog.wordpress.com

5. thehighchairchic.com

6.Thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com

Ok so now my 10 questions to answer:

1. How did you name your blog? What was your inspiration?

2. Why did you want to blog?

3. What is your favorite time of the day and why?

4. If you found a treasurer box in the middle of an empty room would you open it? Why or Why not?

5. Who are your inspirations in life?

6. Do you believe in fate? why or why not?

7. If you could choose a color pant to represent how you feel right now, what color would it be, and what feeling would it represent? (Example: grumpy pants red)

8. What is your dream job?

9. What is your favorite name?

10. Was blogging all you thought it would be why or why not?

The Rainbow Pants is on its Second Printing

The rainbow pants release

I am so very grateful to everyone who has supported my first children’s book, The Rainbow Pants. It has done so well we have just received our second printing. I did not think that anything could beat the feeling of getting my first box of books, that was until I received my box of “second printing” books. The local Key Bank in Brewer, Maine has chosen to have The Rainbow Pants be their “business of the month” and it is prominently displayed in their lobby, (pictures to come). I never could have predicted how well people truly enjoyed the story of Peter T. Peacock and his pants.

I just want to say a huge Thank you to my amazing illustrator:

Lindsay Weirich aka: The Frugal Crafter & to all of you who have read and shared The Rainbow Pants with others.

I am grateful & blessed!!

Speaking of painting, here is a quick and fun scrapbook page made with white cardstock, a black marker and watercolor paint:

DCF 1.0

This is really easy to make, in fact I made the page in real time, I thought about pausing the video while I cut out photos, traced the letters and wrote my journaling but apparently I have no trouble thinking of stuff to gab about while preforming these tasks. I hope I shared enough scrap-booking tips with you during this video to make it worth your while, if not, let me know and I can certainly make the…

Can’t believe it’s Back to School time already!!

Can’t believe it’s Back to School time already!!.

Great Article about a fellow writer from Maine (you might have heard of him): Stephen King

maine

As a writer from Maine, I get asked about our most famous author Stephen King.  “Hey, do you know Stephen King”? Well Maine is a small state, and yes we are like one big small town, but no, I am not on a first name basis with Mr. King. Although I do think he is an amazing writer, and I have learned much from, him just by reading his great stories. The article written in The New York Times, shows how “normal and down to earth” the King family truly is. Of course The Rainbow Pants is not in the same genre as the scary stores of Mr. King but maybe his grandchildren might be interested? What do you think? Happy Rainbow Pants day everyone!!!

Can’t believe it’s Back to School time already!!

crayons

Is it me or does it seem like our summer speeds up after the Fourth of July? Well here at The Rainbow Pants, back to school shopping is already underway. While picking out their boxes of crayons, it was one of my son’s who said  “The Rainbow Pants, is a perfect book for going back to school”. I have to agree, a great book about the first day of school and the ever important question of “what will you wear”?

Why not add The Rainbow Pants book to your back to school list.

You can get a copy of The Rainbow Pants from the publisher
